Why sort?

First of all, because it is a legal obligation in the Brussels-Capital Region. But you might be wondering, why this is a requirement? What is the advantage of this sorting, for society, but also for you as a business in Brussels?

  • 1. Sorting is a form of sustainable resource management

Our mode of consumption is leading to an increasing production of waste. Sorting waste makes it possible to recycle it better, to give it a second life by transforming it into new objects. And this recycling is beneficial for the environment because it makes it possible to:
    – limit the depletion of natural resources;
    – save energy resources;
    – avoid excessive production of CO2;
    – produce new objects.
By sorting, you are therefore contributing to a more sustainable management of materials.

  • 2. Sorting is good for your image

Sorting has become the norm. Organisations can no longer afford to throw all their waste unsorted into a bag or container with residual waste as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. Colleagues, visitors, customers, partners and suppliers will certainly appreciate being able to sort at your business the way they do at home.

  • 3. Sorting does not require major investments

The introduction of sorting is relatively simple to set up and most citizens are already familiar with sorting at home  => Find the steps for successful waste sorting in the “How to sort?” section below.

The better you sort your waste, the smaller your financial investment will be, because collecting waste that can be recycled will cost you less than collecting residual waste which cannot be recycled. For example, collecting PMD, paper -cardboard and glass is on average 3 to 4 times cheaper than collecting residual waste!

War Heritage Institute

For Thierry and his colleagues at the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History, sorting has been part of their good habits for a long time.

Idyl

Marie's salon, Idyl, offers natural treatments that respect both the body and the environment. So it's no wonder that the healthy habits here include sorting.

How to sort?

By following these five steps, you can build a solid foundation for a successful sorting project: commitment, monitoring, infrastructure, involvement and logistics.

Go to the website of Fost Plus for more information on those five stages.

  • 1. Commitment

    • Commitment of the manager of your business, restaurant or snack bar or representative of your company or organisation CSR, environmental policy, etc.)
    • Announcement that “we sort here”
    • Strong will to sort for recycling purposes
    • Appointment of a waste manager within the business
    • Making a budget available
  • 2. Monitoring

    • Analysis of the basic (waste) situation within the business
    • Regular quality control of sorting
    • Monitoring of quantities removed by the collector
    • Feedback to staff and customers/visitors (positive and negative)
  • 3. Infrastructure

    • Good and clearly visible sorting islands (bins attached together)
    • Appropriate bins (for the types of waste, volumes, clearly identified segments to be sorted)

for PMD: blue bin with round insertion hole; for paper: yellow bin with a slot; for glass: green bin with round insertion hole; for residual waste: black or dark grey bin without lid; for plastic wrapping films: in a sorting bag for films next to your paper/cardboard container.

    • Respect of the colour code (blue for PMD, green for glass, yellow for paper/cardboard, etc.)
    • Use of right bags: also following the colour code, inside the bins, of suitable size and strength
    • Clear and visible sorting instructions (what goes where?)
    • How do I choose the right bins? What should I consider when buying? Indoor or outdoor?
    • Do you want outdoor or indoor bins? This decision determines the choice of material for the bins (sturdy, mobile,…).
    • Criteria for outdoor use :
      • Fix them to the ground (unless used temporarily) to prevent theft or vandalism.
      • Opt for small openings to prevent small bags being thrown in and bins overflowing.
      • Provide an ashtray on the side.
      • Consider their weather resistance.
      • Covered bins are available.

For this purpose, use the stickers developed as part of the Recycle BXL Pro campaign (free to download at the bottom of this page) or order free stickers via Fost Plus

  • 4. Involvement

    • Information, motivation and involvement of all staff and visitors (via various channels), from the moment you make the commitment
    • Communication on sorting locations (for staff, but also for visitors)

Use the posters created as part of the Recycle BXL Pro campaign (free to download here)

    • Staff training (e.g.: e-learning)
  • 5. Logistics

    Involvement of the whole chain:

    • cleaning staff: training, provision of bags, maintenance of bins
    • waste collector: contract, requirement for feedback from the collector

List of collectors

Below is a non-exhaustive list of active waste collectors in Brussels who collect the main waste streams (PMD, paper-cardboard, glass, residual, plastic packaging films) for businesses.

Recypark and waste collection or treatment facilities

You can also bring your waste directly to a waste collection or treatment facility, such as a Recypark. For waste streams that you generate in small quantities or on an irregular basis, this may come out cheaper for you.
When you bring your waste to a facility yourself, the facility must issue you with a traceability document – to be kept for at least 5 years. Here is the list of authorised collection facilities and waste processing centres (en fr/nl/en).
